Abstract

Antisense technology, a rapid, rational drug design technology, is developed to produce highly specific drugs for a plethora of diseases. The key to the technology is the inhibition of protein production rather than antagonizing or blocking the effects of proteins after they are formed. Antisense drugs bind to their target mRNA, tricking the cells into dispatching a natural enzyme (RNase H) that degrades the mRNA. As a result, vital genetic signals are prevented from reaching the ribosome and protein production is blocked, thus reducing the synthesis of undesirable proteins such as bcl-2 and protein kinase C-alpha. This article features the production of novel drugs using antisense technology for treating various diseases.
